Brittany Novotny Filley Art Museum Director: Recognized as Governor’s Arts Leader of the Year

Posted Tuesday February 10, 2026

The team and Board of Directors of the Vernon Filley Art Museum are thrilled to celebrate Executive Director Brittany Novotny, who has been named the Governor’s Arts Leader of the Year—one of the highest honors for the arts in Kansas. This award recognizes individuals for exceptional leadership, innovation, and lasting impact in the arts.

For Novotny, the honor reflects a career rooted in the belief that the arts belong to everyone. She has served in a leadership role at the Filley since it first opened in June 2014, helping shape the Museum’s vision and growth from the very beginning with close mentorship by strong community members. Leading with curiosity, care, and a deep commitment to community, Brittany has guided the organization through more than a decade of growth and change while keeping artists and the community at the center of every decision.

“Brittany consistently amplifies the voices of artists through her leadership,” said Martha Cortes, Operations Manager. “She understands the importance of creating access and opportunity for emerging and established artists alike. Brittany believes deeply in the transformative power of the arts, and she brings that belief to life in her work every day.”

A fierce advocate for the arts and arts education, Brittany has expanded the museum’s role as a vibrant cultural hub by enthusiastically creating new programs and strengthening connections with local schools and young audiences—bringing engaging exhibitions and meaningful community programs for all ages through museum visits and outreach programs to schools.

“She embraces innovation and ensures that we are exposed to diverse art forms, artists, and stories,” said Holly Launchbaugh, Executive Director of the South Central Community Foundation “She has an extraordinary ability to introduce audiences to new and unfamiliar experiences while fostering a sense of inclusion and belonging.”

Novotny has also worked to grow the Museum’s connections with other arts organizations and local and regional museums, creating unique artistic partnerships and opportunities. “She collaborates with other museums and galleries across Kansas and throughout the region. I consider her to be one of the best in the Art World,” said Dick Bixler, Chair of the Filley Board of Directors.

Governor Laura Kelly and the Kansas Arts Commission (KAC) at the Kansas Department of Commerce announced the recipients of the 2026 Kansas Governor’s Arts Awards during the annual ceremony on Monday, February 2, at the Docking State Office Building in Topeka.
