Saturday, March 5th, 1:30pm: Regular monthly “First Saturday” tour. Regular admission applies, members FREE. Please join us monthly for a special tour led by our docent tour guides.

February 20th  at 6pm: Gallery talk with artist Dennis Hodges. Special event -members free; $10-non-members! Wine and Cheese to be served!

Friday January 29th: 10am to noon: Kansas Day School Tours and Art Class Activities: Docent tours of the museum will be led by Beth Novotny and our Sunflower art class will be led by art instructor Mary Harden. jazzFriday, June 19th at 7pm: Legacy Arts Society private event.  Join Us in Welcoming: Lisa Hittle, Sax & Randy Zellers, Guitar for a concert featuring a survey of Jazz Styles. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Lisa Hittle, assistant professor of music, has been with Friends University since 1995.  She is the director of the Jazz Department and instructor of saxophone.  Lisa directs two full jazz ensembles and several jazz combos.  She also teaches jazz improvisation classes and applied saxophone.  Hittle is an alumna of the of Stan Kenton Orchestra, an active jazz musician in the Wichita Area and an adjudicator/clinician throughout the Midwest.  The Wichita Arts Council selected Lisa as the 2006 Wichita Arts Educator of the Year. Randy Zellers is on the faculty at Friends University, teaching jazz guitar, guitar ensemble, jazz theory and jazz combos.  He is one of the busiest professional guitar players in the area, freelancing as a jazz guitarist and pit orchestra musician.

Wednesday, March 11th at 7pm:  Locals with a love of art and photography are invited to join the newly formed South Central Kansas Artists’ Guild. This organization is a cooperative of the Pratt Community College Delmar Riney Art Gallery and the Vernon Filley Art Museum. The second meeting will be held at PCC and all are welcome. Free and open to the public.

Wyatt Townley will host a presentation for the Legacy Arts Society. Her work has been read by Garrison Keillor on NPR, featured in Ted Kooser’s “American Life in Poetry,” and published in journals ranging from The Paris Review to Newsweek. She has published five books, three of poetry, most recently The Afterlives of Trees, a Kansas Notable Book and winner of the Nelson Award. The confluence of poetry and poetry-in-motion has shaped Wyatt’s life. In her two-year term as Kansas Poet Laureate, she has visited forty communities with some sixty programs. Her mission is two-fold: to bring people home to poetry, and poetry home to people.

photo (322)A visit to www.lynfenwick.blogspot.com this week will give you a sneak look at the wonderful holiday exhibit at the Vernon Filley Art Museum.  Through December, holiday treasures from private collections, as well as holiday art from local artists will be on display.  The Members Preview Reception will be Friday evening, Dec. 5th at 7 p.m., and the exhibit will be open for the public Saturday, Dec. 6th at 1 p.m.   Since the monthly 1st Saturday Docent Tour at 1:30 falls on the same day as the public exhibit opening, if you are at the Filley at 1:30 you may enjoy a docent tour of the holiday exhibit.  This is a great outing for families to get into the holiday spirit and no reservations are required!
You will see holiday treasures that are normally only seen in a visit to the owners’ homes, and you will also have the opportunity to see original works in celebration of the season done by local artists and artisans.

Goals to Benefit The Greater Pratt Region

• The museum is a cultural center enhancing the quality of life for the people of the Pratt Region and surrounding areas.
• The museum provides increased access to the arts.
• Public schools have the opportunity to use the museum to expose both youths and adults to a variety of art and artists.
• Museum membership and volunteer opportunities are available to the community.
• Artistic development and expression is nurtured by art classes offered through the museum.
• A gallery is reserved to host guest artist shows. Visiting shows include area, regional, and traveling exhibitions of varying styles and topics.
• The museum has enabled the Filley art collection to remain in the Pratt Region.
• Our quality fine art museum will encourage people to visit the Pratt Region.
